Breast Ultrasound and its Indication

Diagnostic tests that are used to detect any abnormalities inside the body have greatly evolved from the simplest devices to more complicated and highly technological machines that can detect even the innermost portion of an organ.

Today, people who are suffering from a certain disease condition can opt for many diagnostic tests as he wishes to rule out the accurate diagnosis. These screening tests can be invasive, which involves creating a break in the skin integrity to insert a needle or an imaging device, or non-invasive that promises lesser pain and discomfort.

One of these popular non-invasive procedures is the breast ultrasound, which is being utilized by women to detect any abnormality in their breast area that could possibly lead to cancer or malignant tumor growth.

However, even if this procedure are widely being utilized in hospitals and cancer detection clinics, more and more women are still in big question whether this intervention is worth the cost or will it benefit them a lot. To help alleviate the apprehension that most women are having towards non-invasive procedures, such as breast ultrasound, it is ideal to provide some information regarding the indication of this type of diagnostic procedure.

It is used to assess any breast malformations and abnormalities. Although there are more accurate diagnostic procedures that can totally determine the extent of abnormalities in the breast, doctors and other health care providers often recommend and teach the importance of submitting once self for ultrasound procedures initially. This is to help determine if there are any non-standard growths of masses in the breast, or any obstruction in blood flow, without spending too much. It is used for cancer detection. When the woman’s breasts have more fat deposits and dense, or if the woman is pregnant and exposure to radiation is contraindicated, this type of diagnostic test is opted rather than Mammography or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to rule out the presence of a cancerous tumor, because it is less invasive, and the patient will not be exposed to pain or to radiation.

It is used as a guide during Biopsy. Breast Biopsy is the ultimate or more accurate diagnostic test to confirm the diagnosis of cancer among women who have been noted to have presence of cancerous tumors on their breast. However, doctors or oncologist physicians uses and ultrasound to guide them in performing the biopsy, so that they will not be able to directly hit or traumatize the tumor when the biopsy needle is being inserted inside the woman’s breast.

It is used in some other procedures involving the breasts. These procedures include implantation of silicon for breast enhancement, which is common on Aesthetic or Cosmetic Surgeries. Ultrasound is utilized to confirm the placement of breast implants and to assess if there are any blockage made after the procedure.
